Energy Performance of Buildings Directive EPBD (Energy Performance of Buildings Directive) will bring significant obligations to building automation and smart lighting over the next few years. The aim is to improve the energy efficiency of buildings, reduce costs and reduce their carbon footprint – but at the same time increase the safety and comfort of buildings.

The The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) is part of the EU's Fit for 55 readiness package, which aims to reduce EU emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. The primary objective of the directive is to improve the energy efficiency of buildings and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to achieve a net-zero building stock by 2050 at the latest. The directive entered into force in May 2024 and must be implemented nationally in the member states by 29 May 2026.

  • Changes are being prepared in Finnish legislation, for example to the Construction Act, the Act on the Energy Performance of Buildings and several building regulations. Building regulations concerning both new construction and renovation as well as energy efficiency will change. At least 11.7% energy savings by 2030 compared to the 2020 forecast.
  • Exemplary role of the public sector: authorities and municipalities must improve their own energy efficiency (including building renovation and lighting renewal).
  • Energy audits: large companies (250+ employees or a certain turnover threshold) are required to conduct regular energy audits.
  • Smart systems: emphasis on control, automation and consumption monitoring.

💡 Why is it worth making these changes in a timely manner?
